Aerating your lawn is a process in which spikes penetrate the surface of the turf and extract core "plugs"  from the lawn.  These plugs are then left on the surface of the turf so that they can naturally decompose.  This process reduces soil compaction, allows air to reach the root structure and opens up a pathway for new nutrients. 

Overseeding introduces new seed growth to your lawn.  This is a great way to improve the appearance of your lawn while adding a wider range of turf types to the lawn.  In order for overseeding to work the best, it should be combined with aerating.  Seed will fall into the holes thereby providing the optimal seed-to-soil contact that is needed for germination.  If seed is merely thrown onto to surface of compacted ground, it will not take root!
